Why I Chose Counseling as My Career

My decision to pursue a career in mental health counseling is rooted in a lifelong passion for helping others, particularly

those facing emotional and psychological challenges. Growing up, I witnessed the impact that untreated mental health issues

had on individuals and families within my community. This left a lasting impression on me and sparked a desire to be part of

the solution. As I matured and gained life experience, I realized that my natural empathy, patience, and ability to listen

without judgment were qualities that aligned well with the counseling profession. I wanted a career that allowed me to

support healing, foster resilience, and promote personal growth. Counseling offered the ideal combination of purpose and

professionalism, providing the tools and training to make a lasting difference in people's lives.

Career Goals

My short-term goal is to complete my clinical mental health counseling program and become a Licensed Professional

Counselor (LPC). During my internship, I aim to gain hands-on experience in individual and group therapy settings, with a

special interest in working with adolescents who struggle with substance use and trauma. In the long term, I plan to specialize

in adolescent mental health and addiction counseling, ideally in a residential or juvenile justice setting where I can support

youth in crisis and their families. Eventually, I hope to open a private practice or lead a community mental health initiative

that integrates counseling, mentorship, and prevention programming for at-risk youth.

Areas of Personal Growth and Development

Preparing for a career in counseling has been as much a personal journey as it has been a professional one. Returning to

graduate school as an adult came with its own set of challenges, including balancing academic responsibilities with work,

family, and self-care. Through this journey, I’ve grown in self-awareness, emotional regulation, and boundary-setting. I’ve

learned how to manage stress in healthier ways, how to receive constructive feedback with openness, and how to challenge my

cognitive distortions. The program has also expanded my cultural competence, ethical decision-making, and understanding of

the complex systems that impact mental health. Each step forward has deepened my confidence and solidified my commitment

to this profession.

My New Career as a Counselor

As I transition from student to professional, I am excited to begin my new career as a mental health counselor. My current

role as a lead counselor in a juvenile substance abuse program has already given me a solid foundation in working with

vulnerable populations. I’ve gained valuable experience conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, leading

therapeutic groups, and collaborating with families and probation officers. This work has affirmed my calling and prepared me

for the responsibilities and rewards that come with being a counselor. Moving forward, I hope to continue growing

professionally, staying informed through continuing education, and contributing to the field by advocating for mental health

awareness and accessible services.
